Revisiting the Basics to Soundproof Your Living Space

Happy

Defined as any method of reducing the ability of sound to travel between point A and point B, soundproofing can be accomplished by both the reduction of noise and the absorption of noise. But in order to understand the concept of soundproofing, it’s important to understand the concept of blocking sound. Basically, there are only three ways to block or reduce noise: space, mass and dampening.

When it comes to space, it’s simple: space impedes sound travel. The further you are away from a source of sound, the less likely you are to hear it! For example, imagine walking your dog down a busy city street and a fire truck is rounding the corner about five blocks away. You are less likely to hear the siren since the truck isn’t near. Similarly, a neighbor who lives a few houses down is less likely to disturb you with a party than a next-door neighbor.

Likewise, the more mass between the origin and the destination of a sound wave, the less audible the sound wave will be once it reaches its destination point. How many times have you been asked to close a door or window to reduce the amount of noise you’re producing? Imagine you’re inside your bedroom, listening to music and your roommate complains about the volume. You can simply shut your door to reduce the amount of noise!

In this example, dampening also works. You can put a blanket in the opening under your door to muffle the sound traveling outside of your bedroom. A way to absorb sound by forcing sound waves to travel through  various layers of material, you can use a variety of material densities to achieve the amount of dampening you’re looking for. When you obstruct a sound wave’s path via dampening, you’re ultimately absorbing the sound wave before it has a chance to become airborne.
